Taranaki Maunga negotiations

Our tūpuna maunga
The latest news and updates on the Taranaki Maunga Negotiations.

Recognising Taranaki as an ancestor is integral to fulfilling the aspirations of
Ngā Iwi o Taranaki relating to our maunga.

The wider iwi aspirations have been captured within a framework called He Kawa Tupua. Underpinning these aspirations is the desire that ngā uri o Taranaki whānui are enabled and resourced to participate in activities that will encourage cultural connection and revitalisation relating to our maunga.

Through the respective Deeds of Settlement with the Crown, Taranaki Iwi, Ngāruahine, Te Atiawa, Ngāti Ruanui, Ngā Rauru, Ngāti Tama and Ngāti Mutunga settled their Historical Treaty of Waitangi Claims and agreed to a separate process in relation to redress for Taranaki Maunga.

These seven Iwi who have settled their treaty grievances with the Crown also agreed to work together with the mandated representatives of Ngāti Maru who are still in the process of negotiating their claim, to develop an apology and cultural redress in relation to Taranaki Maunga.
