Ngā Rau Matatiki
Ngā Rau Matatiki opens at David Street
Te Kotahitanga o Te Atiawa is proud to celebrate the opening of Ngā Rau Matatiki, a new kaumātua housing development at David Street in Ngāmotu.
This special project has delivered five warm, healthy two-bedroom homes designed with the comfort, wellbeing, and independence of our kaumātua in mind. Located close to Taranaki Base Hospital, these homes provide a safe and supportive place for our elders to live, while remaining connected to their community and whānau.
The name Ngā Rau Matatiki derives from a line of a well-known waiata composed by Te Rū Kōriri Wharehoka called “Kei te tangi hotu rā”. The phrase refers to the many springs that flow into a river — a powerful metaphor for the knowledge, wisdom and life experiences our kaumātua who continue to share with future generations.
Te Kotahitanga o Te Atiawa worked in partnership with Te Atiawa Iwi Holdings Limited Partnership, Emerge Aotearoa, Ka Uruora Taranaki and Ka Uruora Kāinga to bring this development to life. The project was built by Profound Group, led by Te Atiawa uri Isiah Reynolds, something we are incredibly proud of.
Supporting Māori businesses is an important focus for our organisation, and we are pleased to share that 62% of procurement for this project went to Māori businesses, helping to strengthen our local Māori economy.

Ngā Rau Matatiki marks an important milestone for Te Kotahitanga o Te Atiawa as the first kaumātua homes delivered by our organisation and comes as we celebrate 10 years since settlement.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who contributed to this kaupapa. It is through strong partnerships and shared vision that we can continue creating opportunities and better outcomes for our iwi.

Paepae Karanga Wānanga
“Ko te reo karanga, he reo nō te wahine, he reo e whakaoho ana i te wairua, e here ana i te tangata ki te whenua.”
Supported by Te Kotahitanga o Te Atiawa, Kāhui LTD will be facilitating a series of Karanga Wānanga alongside hapū over the coming months, creating spaces for the reclamation, strengthening, and continuation of this sacred art form.
The first of these wānanga was held at Muru Raupatu on the 14th and 15th of March, with the manaakitanga and support of Puketapu Hapū. This wānanga was rich with kōrero and mātauranga, generously shared by our pou kuia and guided with care by kaiwhakahaere Rangimokai Knuckey.
The space was deeply inspiring and it provided a place where wahine felt held, affirmed, and reconnected to the spiritual and ancestral power of karanga.
Te Kotahitanga o Te Atiawa will also be hosting the final Karanga Wānanga on the 18th and 19th of July. Registrations will open in early June, and we encourage our wahine to keep an eye out for this opportunity to walk further into this taonga tuku iho.
Te Riri me te Raukura

This year marked a significant milestone as we gathered on the 17th March 2026 for the 16th Annual Te Riri me te Raukura Commemoration, honouring the legacy and history of Te Kohia Pā and the enduring values symbolised by the Raukura.
Te Riri me te Raukura was a time for our whānau, hapū, and iwi to come together in acknowledgement of the first shots fired in the Taranaki Land Wars, and to uplift the teachings of peace, resilience, and hope carried by our tūpuna.
As we stepped into the 16th year of this kaupapa, we continued to strengthen the bonds of Kotahitanga and ensured these stories lived on through our tamariki and mokopuna. If you wanted to access the photo gallery, please click the button below.
Ngā whakataetae Kapa Haka ā-rohe o te Kāhui Maunga
He mihi nui ki ngā rōpū kapa haka katoa i whakakao mai i ngā wiki kua pahure, ā, ki te whakanui i tō tātou ahurea Māori anō hoki ki te motuhaketanga o Te Kāhui Maunga. I kitea te tino wairua o “Motuhake ki te kāinga” i ngā mahi katoa – he tū rangatira, he tū māia, he tū Māori.
E noho whakahī ana ki ngā kai whakaihuwaka i riro i a rātou te tūranga tuatahi mō Te Kāhui Maunga, Tū matiketike mai rā Ngā Purapura o Te Tai Hauāuru. Ko ngā reo o ngā mātua tūpuna i rangona. Ko te tū a Taranaki i kite. He hirahiratanga tēnei whakatutukitanga mo te kapa nei, nā e poho kereru ana.
Ka tū a Ngā Purapura o Te Tai Hauāuru hei kānohi mō tō tātou rohe o Aotea, tahi atu me Te Reanga Morehu o Rātana, Ngā Waihotanga, me Te Kuranui o Paerangi.

A heartfelt acknowledgement goes to all the kapa haka groups who gathered over the past few weeks to celebrate our Māori culture and the uniqueness of Te Kāhui Maunga. The true spirit of “Motuhake ki te kāinga” was evident throughout every performance — standing with dignity, courage, and pride as Māori.
We are extremely proud of the champions who claimed first place for Te Kāhui Maunga, Ngā Purapura o Te Tai Hauāuru, who stood tall. The voices of our ancestors were heard, and the presence of Taranaki was seen. This is a significant achievement for the group, one that fills us with pride and admiration.
Ngā Purapura o Te Tai Hauāuru now stand as representatives for our Aotea region at Te Matatini 2027 at Hopuhopu, Waikato – 22-27 February 2027, alongside Te Reanga Morehu o Rātana, Ngā Waihotanga, and Te Kuranui o Paerangi.
