On the 2nd of March, Muru Raupatu Marae, Puketapu provided the warm backdrop on a chilly morning to formally welcome Mitchell Ritai into his new role as CEO of Te Kotahitanga o Te Atiawa Trust.
Embraced by his immediate whānau, including his grandchildren who brought ngā tamariki nohinohi from Te Kura Kaupapa o Te Pihipihinga Kākano mai i Rangiātea, Mitchell was surrounded by his Ngāti Mutunga whanaunga who he has been working for over the last five years.
His tuakana Damon Ritai spoke on behalf of his whānau, celebrating whakapapa connections to the many hapū of Te Atiawa including Puketapu. Jamie Tuuta, spoke of Mitchell’s time at Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Mutunga Trust expressing gratitude and appreciation of the immense influence of his mahi during his tenure. This mahi included providing leadership not only in management and operations but also providing opportunities to build and strengthen cultural capacity and capability among the whānau.
Mitchell spoke about how excited and honoured he is to take on this role, with a keen focus of providing continuous support of the aspirations of the whānau and hapū. Expression of kotahitanga was shared by Mitchell using the whakatauki “ko te toki tē pia ki te wai, tē tangatanga ki te rā” Likening the binding (people) of the toki to its handle, that is let it be tight in such a way that it may never be weaken. Te Kotahitanga o Te Atiawa is privileged to has an experienced CEO who brings a wealth of leadership knowledge to the organisation.

This weekend’s Te Kāhui Maunga Regionals promises to be a beautiful celebration of kapa haka excellence, made even more special with the event being hosted in our own Whai Tapuwae nō Rongo – Waitara Clifton Park.
Wishing all rōpū taking the stage the very best of luck — may your mahi, your waiata, and your wairua shine. A special mihi to our own Ngā Purapura, who will also be performing; we’re so proud of you all and cannot wait to see you represent with heart and pride.

This year marks a significant milestone as we gather on the 17th March 2026 for the 16th Annual Te Riri me te Raukura Commemoration, honouring the legacy and history of Te Kōhia Pā and the enduring values symbolised by the Raukura.
Te Riri me te Raukura is a time for our whānau, hapū, and iwi to come together in acknowledgement of the first shots fired in the Taranaki Land Wars, and to uplift the teachings of peace, resilience, and hope carried by our tūpuna.
As we step into the 16th year of this kaupapa, we continue to strengthen the bonds of Kotahitanga and ensure these stories live on through our tamariki and mokopuna.
