Overview
Strengthening our identity, connection and visibility on our mounga for Te Atiawa is important. Since the beginning of 2023, Te Kotahitanga o Te Atiawa have held a number of ā kanohi and online wānanga to bring us together to share our dreams, aspirations and kōrero about what a new Te Atiawa whare / North Taranaki Visitor Centre could look, feel and sound like.
In March and September 2023, Te Kotahitanga o Te Atiawa ran online wānanga and provided whānau with an update on the North Taranaki Visitor Centre redevelopment.
The series was delivered via Zoom and hosted by Jamie Tuuta, Liana Poutu, Te Poihi Campbell and Hemi Sundgren. With guest panellists Anaru Wilkie, Damon Ritai, Sera Gibson and Mitchell Ritai.

During February and March 2022, Te Kotahitanga o Te Atiawa delivered a series of online wānanga. Our panel of hosts discussed a variety of topics, including our history, our whakapapa connection, tikanga, karakia and waiata that relate to our mounga. We discussed the Taranaki Maunga Settlement process and what this means for all of us as uri, and we looked into the future to talk about our shared aspirations and vision of what we want our mokopuna to experience.
Wānanga 1
On Monday, 21 February 2022, Te Kotahitanga o Te Atiawa delivered its first of four online Taranaki Mounga wānanga. This was a way for our Te Atiawa uri to learn more about their connection to our tupuna mounga, Koro Taranaki.
Delivered by our Chair Liana Poutu, Jamie Tuuta, Hemi Sundgren and Anaru Wilkie, the first wānanga covered topics including:
- A reflection on our history
- Te haerenga mai o Pukeonaki | The journey of our tupuna
- Te Kāhui Mounga | Who are the people of the Kāhui mounga
- Tokomaru | The arrival of Tokomaru waka, the cargo and our people of Tokomaru.

Wānanga 2
On Monday, 28 February 2022, Te Kotahitanga o Te Atiawa delivered its second of four online Taranaki Mounga wānanga. This was a way for our Te Atiawa uri to learn more about their connection to our tupuna mounga, Koro Taranaki.
This wānanga was delivered by our Chair Liana Poutu, Damon Ritai, Jamie Tuuta, Hemi Sundgren and Te Poihi Campbell, covering topics including:
- Our hapū make up
- What our Rohe looked like historically and how it looks today, as well as
- Providing answers to some of the pātai asked in our first wānanga.

Wānanga 3
On Monday 7 March 2022 Te Kotahitanga o Te Atiawa delivered its third online Taranaki Mounga wānanga. This was a way for our Te Atiawa uri to learn more about their connection to our tupuna mounga, Koro Taranaki.
This wānanga was delivered by our Chair Liana Poutu, Mitchell Ritai, Jamie Tuuta, Hemi Sundgren and Te Poihi Campbell, covering topics including:
- Our hekenga
- Ngā wāhi o te Mounga / place names on the mounga
- Nga whakataukitanga (guiding principles) when negotiating the mounga settlement, as well as;
- Providing answers to some of the questions asked by whānau in our previous wānanga.

Te Kotahitanga o Te Atiawa held its fourth online Taranaki Mounga wānanga on Monday, 14 March 2022. This is a wonderful opportunity for our Te Atiawa uri to learn more about their connection to our tupuna mounga, Koro Taranaki.
