He whakapapa – Background of the names of the education offerings

The names Pou Tina, Pou Whenua, Pou Wānanga and Pou Kōrero are a small sequence of a Te Atiawa whakapapa.

This sequence follows after the Te Kāhui Ao whakapapa, i.e  Ao Pōuri, Ao Rārangi, Ao Whetu mā, Ao Tātai, who derive their origins from the union of Ranginui and Papatūānuku.

This celestial whakapapa descends to Tamarau-te-hekenga-a-Rangi, who united with Rongoueroa (earthbound being).

Their offspring was Awanui-a-Rangi, the principle ancestor of Te Atiawa Iwi as we know it today.
