Te Ara Taiao Kairuruku / Education Coordinator for Ngāmotu / New Plymouth
Within Ngāmotu, Te Ara Taiao is a collaboration between Ngāti te Whiti hapū, the Department of Conservation, Sustainable Taranaki, and others. Te Ara Taiao aims to enhance connections between schools, hapū and community so that students can get involved alongside others and develop environmental leadership to enhance the mauri and ecology of the whenua, awa and moana.
The Kairuruku/ Education Coordinator role – Ngāmotu / New Plymouth
Te Ara Taiao is looking for a dynamic and connected Kairuruku / Education Coordinator who can help coordinate people and projects, and especially support students and teachers, in conservation related education and mahi.
The Kairuruku/ Education Coordinator will:
– Work with Hapū, schools and the community to co-ordinate environmental projects and kaupapa to enhance an environmental working relationship between all the key parties within the rohe of Ngāti te Whiti.
– Inspire students to build and enhance an environmental leadership forum in Te Ao Māori and Te Ao Pākehā, including setting up a Student Leadership Team utilising the tuakana-teina kaupapa (relationship).
– Provide support and arrange professional development for teachers and students
– Strengthen the use of tikanga, te reo and mātauranga Māori in conservation-related mahi working in partnership with Hapū to enhance what is already in schools.
Your experience / skills
We are seeking somebody with:
• Hapū and community relationships
• Facilitation, organisation, and planning skills
• Knowledge of tikanga me te reo Māori
• Environmental or conservation experience, especially in the field
• Education and/or youth development experience
• Ability to network and bring people together

Sustainable Taranaki – Taranaki Tiaki Taiao works to inspire and support people, businesses, and communities to value the environment and act to prioritise sustainability. It has a history of growing programmes in sustainability, youth development, conservation, and community development.
Contract details and requirements
The role will be 20+ hours per week with a start data around 10 February 2022 to be negotiated in line with the applicant’s availability. This role is initially funded until mid-2024. Access to a reliable car is required.
