North Egmont Visitor Centre

Kei ngā toki mārama, tēnā koutou, hei kupu tātaki māku me pēnei Tū mai Taranaki e, tiketike mai rā tātou, tihei mauri ora.

Earlier this year Te Kotahitanga o Te Atiawa took over the project management of the upcoming redevelopment of the North Egmont Visitor Centre. We are pleased to inform you about an important milestone in the development that holds significant value for Te Atiawa.

This upcoming redevelopment is about to be publicly notified through the Department of Conservation (‘DOC’) Concession process, as we seek the relevant permissions necessary to enable this developmentWe wanted to let our Te Atiawa whānau know first, before it is publicly notified.

This project is deeply rooted in the cultural legacy and identity of Te Atiawa and represents a milestone in our journey to honour and preserve our ancestral connections to our tūpuna mounga. Being located on our tūpuna mounga, the site of the current North Egmont Visitor Centre holds significant historical and spiritual importance to Te Atiawa, as it is located in proximity to many of our Te Atiawa wāhī tapu and taonga.

As Te Kotahitanga embark on this redevelopment, the utmost respect and care for our tūpuna and the surrounding cultural and natural environment while we aim to enhance the visitor centre’s facilities and experiences. An important part of this process is the requirement to apply for a concession from the Department of Conservation.

We believe in maintaining strong relationships and encourage any pātai you have to come directly to Te Kotahitanga. If you have questions and comments or would like to share your perspectives, please contact me at gina@teatiawa.iwi.nz. We welcome any insights, knowledge, or ideas that can contribute to the project’s success and ensure that the redevelopment aligns with our collective cultural values. Together, we can create a visitor centre that not only showcases the rich legacy of Te Atiawa but also represents a place of learning, understanding, and respect for all.

Kāti, hei kupu whakakapi māku me pēnei kia kaha, kia māia tātou i roto i te kawa tapu, torotika ki te rangi e!
